REDEFINING CERAMICS WITH ASTIER DE VILLATTE

We are pleased to announce that a hefty consignment of Astier de Villatte ceramics have arrived at Sanayi313 recently. What makes the brand’s products so unique is multiple firing and white glazing techniques, not to forget a touch of Parisian glamour.

Today we remember Benoît Astier de Villatte and Ivan Pericoli as the contemporary ambassadors of the ceramic studio tradition of 18th and 19th century Paris. Undoubtedly, they own this title mostly because of their characteristic works released under the Astier de Villatte brand over the last 25 years.

The creative duo met while studying at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. They describe their artistic perception of the time in these words: ‘Everyone was wanting to do contemporary art, and we wanted to paint and draw.’ This is the basis of their take on the art of ceramic making: Elegant, refined, visually attractive as if they were made centuries ago, yet equally as contemporary in appearance. When Vilatte and Pericoli founded the Astier de Villatte brand in 1996, they had limited knowledge on the art of dining and dinner table products which they make so skilfully today. The artists employed a set of techniques they learned at school and developed a perspective based on approaching daily objects as work of art, resigning and recreating them throughout the process.

Probably the most distinctive and appealing characteristic of Astier de Villatte ceramics is their white, smooth, sculpture-like texture. Though most items in the collection are white, you are never far from a surprise –a lion’s figure on a plate or a gold ring as the handle of a mug. The character of the products is defined by the clay shaping techniques, multiple firing and white glazing methods. Combined, these features make Astier de Villatte objects stand out at first glance. What is more, even if you are confident that the product is new and one-of-a-kind, they promise to defy the years and age gracefully. The uniqueness of the products seems to reach out to you and whisper wise words about life.

We have to admit that being based in Paris from the very beginning has a profound effect on the brand’s enchanted identity. In this magical city that inspires in cinema and art, it is easy to daydream in picturesque corners and feel as though you are in a movie set. Ultimately, there is a reason why Woody Allen filmed Midnight in Paris here. Back in Astier de Villatte’s workshop, dozens of artists (most of which are Tibetan with years of monastery training under their belt) keep on working to create unique artworks destined for different parts of the world.

Over the years, Astier de Villatte has collaborated and created with a wide range of artists including John Derian, Setsuko Klossowska de Rola, Serena Carone and Nathalie Lété. The brand’s product range is not limited to ceramics, it includes books, diaries, perfumes and candles; yet one thing remains the same – their trademark; magical touch which transpires regardless of creative discipline. Sanayi313’s selection of Astier de Villatte products promise to inject a touch of history into your living space without compromising that contemporary and glamorous appearance.
